Keiten Takahashi
Born in Yamagata City in 1920.
In 1938, he took over his family's foundry business and devoted himself to making tea kettles.
He was selected for the Nitten exhibition for the first time in 1951, and has been selected seven times since then. He has received numerous awards for his innovative forms and elegant works with elaborate designs on the surface of the ground and the crests. In 1992, he was awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure, 4th class.
In 1996, he became the first person living in Yamagata Prefecture to be designated an Important Intangible Cultural Asset and a Living National Treasure (tea ceremony pots).
Since the 1950s, when Yamagata cast iron was not well known, he has held exhibitions in Tokyo and other cities, and together with his excellent works, has made the culture of Yamagata cast iron well known throughout Japan.
